About the calculations
Our calculators use averages: a typical 90 minute sleep cycle, a typical time to fall asleep, typical caffeine content and half-life, and recommended sleep ranges from expert bodies. Your own body may differ. Results are estimates to help you plan.
When to see a doctor
- You snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing during sleep.
- You feel very sleepy during the day even after enough sleep, or fall asleep while driving.
- You've had trouble falling or staying asleep for more than a few weeks.
- You have unusual movements, sleepwalking or strong urges to move your legs at night.
- Low mood, anxiety or stress is keeping you awake.
Babies and children
Baby sleep ranges and wake windows are general guides. Follow your paediatrician's advice for your child, and always follow safe sleep practices.
Pregnancy and medicines
Caffeine and sleep needs can change during pregnancy and with certain medicines. Ask your doctor what's right for you.
If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital.
